Greenfield District Heating was formed to provide secure, affordable heat to the community of Greenfield, Massachusetts using local, sustainably grown and harvested wood chips to heat hot water that will be distributed through the town and hooked up to building’s existing heating systems.

The project will be operated for the benefit of the people who use the heat, with as many buildings as possible in Greenfield being added to the distribution chain.  It will either be formed as a municipal utility, a not-for-profit corporation, or possibly as a member-owned cooperative organization.

Where feasible, this plant will also provide:

¨      cooling in the summer using thermal chillers

¨      domestic hot water

¨      heat for snow melting in areas with high pedestrian traffic and elderly users

¨      conduits for high speed data lines

¨      electricity using co-cogeneration.
